#1 Children and education
Reading, writing and mathematics are the foundation of all learning. Without secure basic skills, all other teaching becomes harder. That is why my five theses for basic education start from the principle that every child must master the fundamentals.
Cognitive skills are at the core. All subjects, including crafts, sports and the arts, strengthen thinking. Recess is for play and being together, not for phones.
Closer cooperation between home and school is paramount. When parents know each other and agree on shared ground rules, children do better.
Segregation must be prevented. Every child should feel accepted and learn the language of schooling well.
Children are not broken by expectations. The right level of challenge creates flow, and knowing one’s own strengths builds self-esteem.
We have what it takes to be the best in the world. Our teachers’ expertise is high, and when home and school are in balance, we can go far.
Teachers, your workplace is Finland’s factory of the future.
